Project Overview
In the early 1980s, Toronto’s Queen’s Quay Terminal underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a dark, industrial warehouse into a modern, mixed-use landmark. At a cost of $70 million, it was one of Canada’s most expensive renovations at the time. Ontario Cutting & Coring played a crucial role in the structural modifications that made this project possible.
The Challenge
Revitalizing the warehouse into a contemporary space demanded significant structural work while preserving the building's integrity.
- Cutting Large Atrium Openings: To introduce natural light, existing slabs had to be carefully removed without compromising the stability of surrounding structures.
- Reinforcing Perimeter Columns: Additional vertical reinforcements, threaded bars, and concrete skins were installed to support the weight of the four new floors.
- Structural Modifications for New Infrastructure: Precise cutting of openings for stairs, elevators, and mechanical services was essential.
- Dismantling Cold Storage Sections: Portions of the original cold storage facility needed removal as part of the redesign.
Our Work
Ontario Cutting & Coring provided precision cutting and coring services to facilitate the building’s transformation. Our scope included:
- Saw-Cutting and Removing Slabs: Creating full-height atrium openings to enhance natural light throughout the structure.
- Cutting Stair and Elevator Openings: Accommodating new vertical infrastructure with precise cuts.
- Modifying Structural Elements: Working within tight constraints to adjust perimeter columns.
- Supporting Heavy Demolition Efforts: Ensuring safe and efficient material removal.
The Result
The Queen’s Quay Terminal renovation stands as a defining project in our company’s history, showcasing our ability to execute large-scale structural modifications with precision and efficiency. This revitalization transformed an aging warehouse into a vibrant commercial and residential hub, setting the standard for adaptive reuse projects across Toronto.
Decades later, we take pride in our role in shaping one of the city’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks.
